Description
English nobleman and warrior, Bartholomew de Burghersh was born in 1329 to a family devoted to martial excellence.
His career began early when in 1339 he accompanied King Edward III on his expedition to Flanders. Four years later Bartholomew
attended the king on his 1342/43 campaigns in Brittany.
By 1346 the 17-year-old Bartholomew had joined the young “Black Prince” Edward’s retinue where he participated in the great Battle of Crecy and demonstrated his skills as a warrior.
In 1348 he was chosen to join the recently formed Knights of the Garter.
After completing a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands, Bartholomew joined the “Black Prince” on his campaign in France that culminated in the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
In 1359, by then the Baron of Burghersh, he followed King Edward III on his last campaign in France which ended with the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360.
Baron Berghersh died in 1369 and was buried at Walsingham Abby.
