Description

10th C Icelandic Viking Chieftain Gunnar Hamundarson was a central figure in the ancient Viking Icelandic Sagas.

Gunnar was a skilled and seasoned Viking warrior-raider, described as being nearly invincible in combat. He was a great athlete, capable of jumping his own 6-foot height, forward or backward and in full armor. He was also a strong swimmer.

Detailed in the Sagas as intelligent, handsome, and a born leader, he was warned not to kill two people from the same family. Failing to heed the premonition, Gunnar killed two men of the Gisser the White family and incurred their vow of vengeance. While initially successful in fending off the avenging family with skilled archery, a broken bow was his undoing and led to his death on home territory.
