Gnaeus Julius Agricola was born in Southern France to a family of senatorial rank. His career in Roman public life began as a Junior Tribune in Britain in 58 AD on the battle staff of the brilliant commander of Roman legions in Britain Suetonius Paulinus. Much is known about Agricola, his many campaigns, and stellar service to Rome from his son-in-law, Legate and historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus.
In 61 AD Tribune Agricola fought with the vastly outnumbered Roman legions against Queen Boudicca’s Celt army at the Battle of Watling Street. In later years when Agricola was asked about the victory of the huge Celt forces, he said, “We never thought of our victory fighting; we fought to save our lives.”
In the ‘Year of the Four Emperors’ 69 AD, Agricola supported Vespasian in his successful attempt to become Emperor, subsequent to which he was sent back to Britain in command of a legion. He next served as governor of Aquitania for three years, returned to Rome, and returned to Britain as governor. He died in 93AD in Gallia Narbonensis – French coast.
