Description
Ivarr was one of the sons of Viking Chieftan Ragnar Lodbrok. Ragnar’s other sons Björn Ironside, Halfdan, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye and Ubba along with Ivarr were consequential Viking warriors.
The Norske Sagas present Ivarr as a fierce and celebrated fighting man. He is described as big, strong, fair and wise.
Ivarr’s nickname Boneless (Ivarr Beinlausi in old Norse) no doubt refers to his physical dexterity, agility and flexibility.
Ivarr was one of the commanders of the Great Heathen Army which invaded Anglo-Saxon England in 865. The Sagas continue to mention Ivarr through 870 as one of the principal warriors of the Great Heathen Army’s campaigns in England. However, from 870 onward his name disappears from the Saga’s and it is assumed that Ivarr died in battle.
