The murder of Caligula and the general chaos that ensued was quelled when the Praetorian Guard advanced Caligula’s uncle, Claudius, as the new Emperor in 41 AD. Although afflicted with several disabilities associated with cerebral palsy, Claudius was intelligent and proved himself an able ruler.
Shortly after his accession to power, Claudius determined that he needed to personally acquire military credentials to accompany his considerable academic acumen. The conquest of Britain would be the vehicle: In 43 AD, Claudius sailed for Britain with General AulusPlautius and four Legions (II, IX, XIV and XX). Despite his brief stay in Britain, Cladius successfully added this territory to the Empire, giving considerable boost to his early reign.
Claudius died in 54 AD, poisoned by his fourth wife Agrippina.
