In the very first years of the 13th century the bishop of Riga, Albrecht von Buxhovden, founded a military order to protect his new colony, Riga. This Cistercian order became known as the Sword Brethren. Within two years the order included 50 knights and 100 serving brothers.
While never achieving the size and wealth of the more famous warrior monk societies they successfully dealt with several military actions in their first decade.
After losing half their members in battle to the Lithuanians the order was inducted into the ranks of the Teutonic Knights.
