The IX Legion “Hispana” was raised by Julius Caesar in 58 BC for his Gallic campaigns. The IXth served Caesar throughout his conquest of Gaul and remained with Caesar fighting against Pompey the Great for most of the Civil War. Subsequent to Caesar’s victory over Pompey’s forces, the IX was retired and its veterans given land on the coast of Italy.
Octavian (Augustus) reinstated the IX Legion to support his actions against Mark Anthony and the maintenance of his Manus Imperium.
Claudius in 43 AD included the IXth in his invasion of Britain. The IXth remained in Britain for 30 years fighting against Celtic Queen Boudicca in 59 AD before being relocated to Germany around 73 AD.
Records of the IXth become sketchy in the early second century and it is thought that the legion was destroyed in the Jewish Rebellion of 132 AD
