They were bodyguards, status symbols and sometimes even executioners for high officials and magistrates of the Roman state. The tradition of the lictors goes back to the founding of Rome and was copied from the Etruscans.
Recruited from the lower classes, lictors walked ahead of a magistrate in a single column bearing the Fasces. By their very presence they brought attention and respect for the person they were attending.
In early times when a death sentence was determined to be in order the lictors would use the axe part of the fasces to decapitate the culprit.
There were formalized numbers of lictors assigned to the rank of a person. A Dictator would have 24 lictors, a Consul 12 and a Praetor would travel with 6 lictors.
