3rd Legion Augusta

The 3rd Legion was founded by Octavian from remnants of Pompey’s 3rd legion in 30 BC and subsequently served Octavian in his war against Antony and Cleopatra. At the successful termination of the Cantabrian War in Spain, 29 BC – 19 BC, the 3rd along with three other legions were awarded the Augusta title. The 3rd Augusta, which had been transferred to Africa, was victorious in defeating the Tacfarinas Revolt of 17 – 23 AD. In 75 DA Vespasian transferred the 3rd to Tebessa where for 50 years they would layout and build an entire city which the legion would protect for 100 years. After the Battle of Carthage in 238 AD the legion was disbanded, only to be reformed in 253 AD for subsequent actions in Macedonia and Gaul.
