In 58 AD Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was appointed the Imperial Governor of Britain by Emperor Nero. Paulinus was one of Rome’s finest generals, a senator and a man of considerable means. In 60 AD Paulinus was faced with a rebellion by several British tribes lead by Queen Boudicca of the Iceni. Despite substantial initial losses to his legions II, IX, XIV and XX, Paulinus soundly defeated Boudicca’s larger army. Subsequent to the defeat of Boudicca, Emperor Nero recalled Paulinus due to his overly harsh programs of post rebellion pacification of Britain.
