In the Spring of 9 AD three of Emperor Augustus’ legions in Germania, the 17th, 18th and 19th, were slaughtered in an ambush planned and executed by German Prince Arminius of the Cherusci tribe in the Teutoburg Forest.
General Publius Quinctilius Varus, Consul of Rome and Governor of the Province of Germania, led his army of thousands of legionnaires and support units into the German forest based on a route of march chosen by his trusted friend Prince Arminius. An ambush awaited the doomed legions.
In the running battle that ensued, all the Romans, some 20,000 souls, were killed or captured. It would be six years before the legions of Rome would return to the dark Teutoburg Forest to bury their dead comrades.
