Born in 510 BC to Cleombrotus, youngest full brother of Spartan King Leonidas, Pausanius was brought up as a Spartan warrior prince. Subsequent to the death of Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, Pausanius was named regent for Leonidas’ young son Pleistrachus, a duty he would hold for a decade.
