Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199) was the third child of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and inherited the title Duke of Aquitaine. Despite initiating a rebellion against his father, he was eventually recognized as successor to the throne.
He became King of England in 1189 and shortly thereafter departed for the Third Crusade. While on crusade he proved his sharp tactical mind and reputation as a fiery, charismatic leader. Returning from the Crusade, he was captured by Leopold of Austria and held for ransom. Upon payment of 100,000 marks of silver, Richard returned to England. In his remaining years, he fought a series of battles to maintain his French territories and was fatally wounded on April 11, 1199.
