When Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in 43 AD, he brought with him an extremely able general who became the first Imperial Governor of Britain – Aulus Plautius.
Plautius’ command in Britain included four outstanding veteran legions, the II Augusta commanded by then-General Vespaician, IX Hispana, XIV Gemina and XX Valaria Victrix (which would remain in Britain over 300 years).
Applying disciplined Roman battle tactics, Plautius proceeded to subdue most of the Celt tribes of Britain most notably King Caratacus of the Catuvellauni tribe. Plautius returned to Rome in 47 AD.
