England’s greatest general Arthur Wellesley was born in Ireland in 1769, the fourth son of the Earl of Mornington. After several years of distinguished service in major campaigns in India as military advisor to the Governor General, Arthur returned to England in 1805 as a Major General.
In England’s war with Napoleon’s France, Wellesley served brilliantly in Portugal and Spain, eventually defeating Napoleon at Waterloo. At war’s end, having been promoted to Field Marshal and awarded the title Duke of Wellington, Wellesley would oversee the occupation army in France until his return to England in 1818.
