Byzantine Empire

In 330 AD Roman Emperor Constantine the Great transformed the Greek port city of Byzantium into the new capital Constantinople. As his Roman Empire of the East grew and expanded, this Eastern Roman Empire came to be known as Byzantium. By the sixth century the greatest of the Byzantine rulers was on the throne, Justinian I. One of the legacies of this marvelous ruler was his law code. The “Codex Justinianus” became the foundation for Continental Europe’s legal systems for centuries to come. The first millennium saw Constantinople as the wealthiest and most populous city outside of China. Entering the second millennium Byzantium became increasingly pressed by the expansion and conquests of the various Moslem entities. This pressure culminated with the capture of Constantinople in 1453 AD by the Ottoman Turks.
