Under the overall command of General Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, the 3rd Foot Guards served in the Peninsular Campaigns as well as at Waterloo.
It was said that the Guard’s regiments were Wellington’s favorite units due to their ‘smartness’ and highly-disciplined conduct both on and off the battlefield. The Guard regiments were called the “Gentlemen’s Sons” regiments because their officers were made up of the most affluent and upper levels of English society.
However, according to the ‘Iron Duke’ it was the NCO’s of the Guards that made the difference. It is interesting to note that he recommended more NCOs from the Guards for commissions than from any other regiments.
