Maeda Toshiie’s remarkable military career and rise to become one of the most powerful Daimyos in Japan began with his acceptance in 1562 into the Red Horu, one of Oda Nobunaga’s two elite bodyguard units. Toshiie became a top level commander in Nobunaga’s forces, fighting in many key battles including Nagashino. With the death of Nobunaga in 1582, Maeda Toshiie was faced with the dilemma of choosing a new overlord, either Ieyasu Tokugawa or Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He chose the latter.
Serving Hideyoshi, he continued to prove himself to be a great general and became one of his new lord’s most trusted lieutenants. Subsequent to the death of Hideyoshi in 1598 Toshiie was able to reconcile his differences with Ieyasu Tokugawa, and he died peacefully in 1599.
