Subotai is recognized as the most able and resourceful of Genghis Khan’s generals. Subotai developed and used to the fullest advantage all of the best elements of the Mongol army: speed, discipline, boldness, and extensive preparation for battle.
Born circa 1172, Subotai entered the Mongol army as a young man and quickly displayed such military skill that he soon became a field general. A succession of campaigns and battles followed: the 1218 invasion of Kwarizmian Empire, battles of Pirvan and Indus in 1220-1221, the advance through Russia to Azerbaijan and Armenia in 1221-1222. After fighting in the great battle at the Kalka River against Prince Mstislav of Kiev and his Cuman army of 80,000, General Subotai returned to Mongolia to serve with Genghis Kahn’s final campaigns before his death in 1227. In the following years, Subotai fought in most of the major campaigns of the Mongol armies until his demise in 1245.
