Product Description

The term “Horde” refers to a Mongol field army. The Golden Horde was Genghis Khan’s grandson Batu Khan’s army for the invasion of Russia. The Mongol armies were the best trained and most disciplined armies of their day. Mongol armies usually beat their numerically superior opponents through skill and organizational discipline, much as the Roman armies had in earlier centuries.
Batu Kahn conquered Russia in 1242 ushering in uninterrupted authority over the land for a century and a half. Mongol armies liked to operate in the winter months which enhanced their mobility and allowed their cavalry forces to cross frozen rivers and marshes with ease.
Batu Kahn died in 1255 and his successor was his brother Berke, who converted the Horde to Islam. Berke’s regime was marked by infighting within the Mongol host.
