The Locrians were an ancient Greek people settled in south central Greece. The Epizypherian Locrians dwelt on the eastern coast of Greece opposite the island of Euboea. The Ozothian Locrians settled on the Gulf of Corinth. The Locrian national hero was Ajax who led the Locrians into battle with 40 ships in the Trojan War.
In 480 BC as the Persians invaded Greece, the Greek city states assembled an army of 7,000 at Thermopylea to confront the invaders. Most city states sent small contingents to assist the Greek army at Thermopylae. The exception were the Locrians and Thespians, virtually sending their entire military force. During the Peloponnesian War the Locrians were once again allied to the Spartan cause.
