The Saca archers were elite units within the forces of the Persian Empire and hailed from Scythia. Much of their land had been made a satrapy and been divided by regional characteristics, such as ‘those near Pamirs’ or ‘those near the Danube.’ The ancient Greeks called the Sacas the Scythians, though they were aware that in ancient Persian they were called Sacai.
In addition to their bows they carried other weapons such as the ‘sagaris’, a wedge shaped axe that could penetrate the Greek helmets and cuirasses. So effective were the Elite Saca units that they would even be employed as shock troops.
The Sacas wore a pointed leopard-skin cap which was a feature of national identity. Additionally it was rumored in the ancient world that their padded armor was crafted with human skin.
