Since its completion in 1103, Berkeley Castle has been home for the Berkeley barons. Berkeley Castle is also the location where King Edward II was imprisoned and murdered in 1327. Thomas, Lord Berkeley served the murdered king’s successor Edward III, fighting at Crecy as well as serving with the Black Prince at Poitiers in 1356.
The Berkeley barony also served with King Henry V in France in the campaigns of the early 1400s in the person of the succeeding Thomas, Lord Berkley.
