While formed and dedicated as a military order by the Pope in the latter part of the eleventh century, the mighty Teutonic Knights did not achieve fame and respect until they elected Herman Von Salza to be their leader. Beginning in 1210 and continuing through 1239 Von Salza guided the growth and destiny of these warrior monks in many crusades.
From their formidable castle headquarters in Marienburg, the Teutonic Knights spread the gospel via the sword and bible for two centuries. In the course of these crusades they fought battles in Prussia, Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic States, Russia, and the Middle East.
