Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub was founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty. Saladin, his father and his uncle achieved prominence in the service of the Sultan of Damascus, Nur-ed-Din. Upon the death of Nur-ed-Din, Saladin became Sultan and supreme ruler. In his rise to power, Saladin created strong land and sea forces while at the same time initiating a revival of the Egyptian economy.
In 1187 at the legendary battle of Hattin, Saladin defeated the Christian Crusaders’ army and recaptured Jerusalem. Subsequently Saladin fought many battles against the greatest of the crusader generals Richard the Lionheart, with each man earning great respect for their adversary on the field of battle. Saladin was a talented strategist, administrator, and
organizer and was held in high regard by both his own people as well as his European antagonists.
