Born to French nobility as Odo de Langery, Odo was from birth directed to a career in the church. By 1088 his stature in the church hierarchy led to his election as Pope. Taking the name Urban II, he became one of the most influential and consequential of Popes.
In 1095 the Byzantine Emperor faced invasion of his domains by the Seljuk Turks and asked for help from Christian Europe. In that same year, Pope Urban at Cleremont, France issued his famous decree entreating Christians to rise to the challenge to recover the Holy Lands from the Moslem occupiers. His purported slogan “Dues Vult’ (“God Wills It”) galvanized the crusaders for 200 years of Christian kings, knights, and peasants as they traveled to the Middle East and fought the Crusade for Christendom.
