Sir Neil Campbell of Loch Awe was an early supporter of Robert the Bruce’s claim to the throne of Scotland. Campbell fought at Bruce’s side in his many battles against the English army or their supporters, going back to the Battle of Methven in 1306, the year Bruce declared his monarchy.
Neil Campbell married Robert the Bruce’s sister Mary and in recognition of his loyalty was awarded the barony of Loch Awe. Sir Neil died in 1316.
