Domhnall II was the twelfth Earl of Mar, inheriting the title from his father Gartnait. Upon the death of Thomas Randolph the Earl of Moray, Regent of Scotland for David (age 5) who was the only living legitimate son of Robert the Bruce, a new Regent was required. The Earl of Mar was named Regent and Guardian of Scotland.
Mar would hold this high office for less than two weeks. On August 12, 1332, the Earl of Mar, one of the commanders of the Scottish army facing the English puppet Edward Balliol’s invasion of Scotland, was killed at the Battle of Dumpplin Moor.
