As a young prince fighting with his father’s forces at the Battle of Alfarrobeina where the Portugese royal army defeated his father, John was captured and was to be executed. John was saved by his Aunt Isabel of Portugal who was married to Philip the Duke of Burgundy. Prince John was brought to Burgundy where he became a member of the Burgundian court and dedicated his sword to the service of Philip the Good.
John subsequently married Charlotte of Lusignan, princess of Cyprus. Elected to membership in the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1456, John died a year later as a result of poisoning, thought to have been done by a family member.
