Product Description

Born to Netherlands nobility in 1425, Adolph was educated in the Burgundian Court of Philip the Good. In 1450 Adolph Lord of Cleves, his father, ceded to him the Ravenstein lands as his domain. In 1453 he married Beatrice of Portugal and served Duke Philip III of Burgundy as a Captain in his war with Ghent. In recognition of his service to the Burgundian state, Adolph was elected to the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1456.
During the reign of Burgundian Duke Charles the Bold, Adolph served as one of his principal generals in the wars with France and the Swiss. Subsequent to Charles death in 1477 and the division of Burgundy, Adolph became military commander of the province of Hainault. In his later years, he came into conflict with Maximilian of Austria to whom he eventually surrendered his force. He died in Zeeland in 1492.
