Born to a patrician Genoese family in 1466, Andrea Doria became a condottiere mercenary as a youth fighting for the Pope and a variety of Italian princes. In 1510 he was appointed Captain-General of Genoese galleys leading them against the Barbary Corsairs. Service with French King Francis I followed as Admiral of the French fleet. After Francis’ defeat and capture at Pavia in 1524, Andrea took service with Pope Clement VII. Extensive service on both land and sea followed for the Hapsburg Charles V throughout the Mediterranean.
Andrea Doria Prince of Melfi was inducted into the
Order of the Golden Fleece in 1531, brevet #175 by King Charles V. Retiring to his estates in Genoa in 1555, Doria died five years later.
