Edward, the Prince of Wales, son of King Edward III of England, caught the fancy of the English people almost from the time of his birth. A brave and brilliant warrior, Edward, called the Black Prince, defeated the superior-in-number French forces at Poitiers and captured King Jean II of France. Sadly this intrepid medieval commander and future king died of fever before he could ascent the English throne.
