If Adolph Hitler was the most villainous figure of the 20th century Heinrich Himmler was the clear runner-up.
The son of a Bavarian schoolmaster, Heinrich missed service in World War I but joined the “Freikorps” after the war in 1918, participating in the Bavarian Civil War. Himler was an early eber of the infant Nazi Party and was with Hitler in the failed “Munich Putsch” to overthrow the government in 1923.
Possessing considerable organizational skills and an unrelenting drive for power Himmler converted his Schutzstaffel (SS) into the most feared organization in Germany with an army that rivaled the regular German forces. Himmler was also the head of the criminal and political police as well as the Gestapo, secret police, chief.
Captured by the British at wars end disguised as a private soldier he committed as a private soldier he committed suicide by poison once his identity was discovered.
