The 10th Century witnessed the emergence of a new social class, not of nobility and not of peasantry -- the knight. Knights were a warrior class developed as a result of military prowess and the church’s need for an offset to the power of the ruling class.
The creation of Military Orders by the Papacy such as Templars and Teutonics during the Crusades period further enhanced the status of knights. Originally knights were obliged to serve their feudal lords especially in times of battle. With political territorial shift of fiefdoms and the increasing wealth of knights, they were able to pay their lords in lieu of service, an institution known as scutage. Knights had to possess considerable wealth to acquire and maintain extremely expensive armor, various horses and retainers necessary to the performance of their knightly role.
